Microphones

All these microphones are designed for portable recording using the wide variety of recorders now available. The microphones work great with Minidisc, DAT, and cassette tape recorders. Many people have also been using these microphones with other equipment such as notebook computers, camcorders, and MP3 players that also have recording capabilities. Good Audio microphones are all based around electret condenser microphone capsules. To work properly these microphones need to be powered. Most minidisc and DAT recorders provide this power through their "plug-in-power" microphone inputs. If your recording equipment does not have a powered microphone input, don't give up hope. Good Audio also sells microphone power supplies, allowing these microphones to work with any equipment that has a line-in recording input. Microphone power supplies can also provide better quality recording even for people that do have recorders with built in power supplies by allowing them to use the line-in inputs on their recorder. Please see the power supply section for more information.

GA-M1

These microphones are perfect for anyone looking to start recording live music. These microphones use two separate capsules each on a 4 foot long cord. Separating the capsules like this allows for many different stereo recording options. Each capsule is enclosed and protected by a rubber coated aluminum case. Alligator style clips just behind the microphones allows them to be easily and securely fastened to many different locations. The microphones can be discretely attached to clothing, hats, or anything else for convenient hands-free recording. Windscreens are included with the microphones to help cut down on wind noise when used outdoors for recording.

The design of these microphones is perfect for binaural recording. Binaural recording involves placing the microphones as close to your ears as possible. The easiest way to achieve this is to attach the microphones to a hat or a pair of glasses. The goal is to record sound almost exactly as the ear's hear it. By doing this you are preserving the subtle stereo effects caused by the shape of your head as well as your surrounds. When listening to binaural recordings through headphones the stereo effect is incredible. You'll hear everything just the way you did when you were there! You'll have a hard time convincing yourself you're not still at the concert. Of course these microphones will record great stereo sound with many other styles of placement, and binaural recordings still sound fantastic when listened to through normal stereo speakers.

GA-M2

The GA-M2 binaural microphones are the next step up from the GA-M1. They have all the same features as the GA-M1, but with a few improvements. Instead of molded plugs, the GA-M2 uses gold plated strain relief plugs, for the best quality connection. Each capsule is on a separate 5 foot Carol brand microphone cable. These cables feature a full foil shield around the conductors. The foil shield and the shield conductor are not used to carry the audio signal, the audio signal is only carried by the inner conductors. The shield is only grounded on the plug side, so no current ever flows in the shield. This provides maximum rejection to electrical interference. The GA-M2 uses the Panasonic WM-61A capsules. Each pair of microphones is matched to within 1 dB. This ensures equal power on both the right and left channels when recording.

Power Supplies

Power supplies allow electret microphones to be used with equipment that does not have a powered microphone input. They also allow microphones to reach their full potential, by providing increased dynamic range and sound quality. Good Audio microphones all require a supply of between 2 to 10 volts. The power supply in most recorders can only provide a few volts to the microphones. With an external power supply the supply voltage to the microphones is 9 volts. This allows the microphones to record in higher SPL situations without distortion or clipping. Good Audio power supplies use high quality metalized film capacitors and metal oxide resistors to ensure the highest sound quality in your recordings. Another huge benefit with using external power supplies is the ability to use your recorders line-in jack instead of the microphone input. Microphone inputs on most recorders are notoriously noisy due to the amplifiers in their gain stages. The sound levels are high enough in most concert recording situations that there is no need for the signal to be amplified.

GA-PS1

This power supply is perfect for all your stereo recording needs. The supply measures approximately 1"x2"x3". Everything is built into a rugged plastic enclosure, with a metal cover. You will have to try very hard to damage this unit. The supply comes ready to go with a 9 volt battery included. All you need to do is plug microphones into the 1/8"(3.5mm) stereo jack, flip the switch, and plug the 1/8"(3.5mm) stereo plug into your recorder. The battery will last for hundreds of hours of continuous recording. It's recommended to change the battery every year or so just to make sure it doesn't leak or corrode. This power supply will work with any of the Good Audio microphones.
